Moving Season and Tips on Using Movers

The AP released a helpful piece yesterday that provides tips on using a professional moving company for your residential relocation. As I've mentioned recently, August is the busiest time of the year for moving companies, and there are hundreds (probably thousands) of sham businesses just looking to take your money and run.

The list of tips provides a birds eye view of what you need to do during the planning stages, on moving day and once you've arrived at your new home. If you're one of the 40 million Americans moving house this year, having a look at this brief article could help you out a bunch.

ABC News Chimes in on Moving Scams

August is the busiest month of the year for the moving industry, and as more and more Americans pack up and move house, unfortunately, more people plot and plan ways to scam consumers out of their hard-earned money. ABC news ran an article on their website earlier today with a few more tips to help people planning a move to prevent being taken in by a scam.

The article is filled with helpful information and some facts that you might not know, like the finer points of the law passed by Congress in 2005 to add more regulations to protect citizens from sham moving companies and how it hasn't worked out so well yet. I've posted a link to the entire article above. You should check it out if you're planning a move for the end of the summer.

Moving Into the Dorm

Granted, moving your child into their Freshman dorm probably doesn't require the services of a moving company . . . but it does require some packing and planning that Moishe's can help you out with. The start of fall semester is right around the corner, and while you're in-coming freshman is busy soaking up the last rays of summer, there's a lot you can be doing to make sure that their first home away from home is as comfortable as possible. Here are a few tips and pointers to consider when getting ready to move your kid into the dorms for the first time.

- Buy a rug. There's rarely anything homey about a dorm room, but bringing a large rug to put on the floor will be the quickest way to add some warmth and homeyness to the room. Places like Target offer great stuff geared toward the college set that are both fashion-forward and affordable.

- Be sure to bring lamps. Another thing that's a pain about dorm rooms is the lighting. If it's off the room is pitch black, if it's on you're nearly blinded. Bringing along some reading lamps for accent lighting is a great way to solve the problem and decorate at the same time.

- Only pack what you need. The number one temptation for Freshman is to try to take their whole bedroom with them. Unfortunately, almost no dorm room in the country will offer enough space to bring everything along. Bring the essentials (bedding, computer, some decor) and creature comforts like favorite movies, books or Cd's.

- Don't forget about storage! One of the best ways to make a small room seem bigger is to invest in some under-the-bed storage bins. Their light weight, fit a lot of stuff, and stay out of view and out of the way.

Common Moving Terms - Valuation

Continuing on yesterdays post about Storage in Transit, today I'd like to explain another commonly used word in the moving business - valuation. It's a term that doesn't apply exclusively to moving companies, but it's certainly one that you should be familiar with before hiring a company to handle your residential relocation.

According to the American Moving and Storage Association, Valuation is the degree of "worth" of any giving shipment. What that means, in a nutshell, is the lump-value of your possessions being transported on moving day. If it helps, think of it as your net worth . . . the amount you would give the insurance company if you lost everything in your home due to a fire. A valuation charge compensates the moving company for a greater degree of liability. Simply put, the more expensive and numerous your belongings, the higher the liability charge is going to be. Providing the mover with a list of your belongings before they arrive at your home is a good way to get an accurate estimate of how much the valuation for your move will be.

Common Moving Terms - Storage in Transit (SIT)

I've been working in the storage industry for so long that it's easy to forget that not everyone is in the know on our lingo. That being said, I thought it might be helpful to create a sort of moving terms dictionary on the blog for any of our customers that may need it. From time to time I'll be posting entries with different frequently used terminology that you might not be familiar with. Today's phrase is extremely important to know - Storage in Transit.

Storage in Transit is an option offered by many moving companies to customers who need to move out of their current home, but won't be moving into the new residence for a short period of time. For example, if you're lease ends on the 30th of the month, but your new one doesn't begin until the third of the following . . . you will need a place to keep your belongings for the three or four days in-between.

Storage in Transit means that a company will move your belongings out of the old home, place them in a convenient storage facility, then move them into the new space at the appropriate time. It will probably cost you more than an average move, but it's well worth it to prevent keeping all of your worldly possessions in a hotel room or in a friends living room.
